It’s focused on “supporting our US-based Delivery Associates employed by Delivery Service Providers, our Amazon Flex Delivery Partners, and Associates working for Integrity Staffing, Adecco Staffing, and RES Staffing, and drivers and support team members of line haul partners under financial distress due to a Covid-19 diagnosis or quarantine.” Besides the company contributing $25m to the fund, it also allows the public to donate if they deem it important. “While we aren’t expecting anyone to do so, you can make a voluntary donation to the fund if you desire to ...

Coronavirus: Pangolins found to carry viruses related to Covid-19

A trafficked pangolin in Kuala Lumpur: The animal is a suspect in the outbreak Pangolins smuggled into China have been confirmed to contain viruses closely related to the one sweeping the world. Sale of the animals in wildlife markets should be strictly prohibited to minimise the risk of future outbreaks, says an international team. Pangolins are the most-commonly illegally trafficked mammal, used both as food and in traditional medicine. Bats are thought to be the original viral source, with another species playing a role in human transmission. In a new research paper, published in the journal Nature, researchers say their genetic data suggests "handling these animals requires considerable caution, and that their sale in wet markets should be strictly prohibited."

Dr. Anthony Fauci: I Don’t Want to ‘Embarrass’ Trump

Jonathan Ernst In a new interview with New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, Dr. Anthony Fauci opened up about the unique challenges of serving on President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force . The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases called it “kind of funny but understandable that people said, ‘What the hell’s the matter with Fauci?’ because I had been walking a fine line.” “I’ve been telling the president things he doesn’t want to hear. I have publicly had to say something different with what he states,” he continued, explaining that he’s engaged in “risky business” but insisting that Trump is not and has not been “pissed off” at him to date. “I don’t want to embarrass him,” Fauci added. “I don’t want to act like a tough guy, like I stood up to the president. I just want to get the facts out. And instead of saying, ‘You’re wrong,’ all you need to do is continually talk about what the data are and what the evidence is. And he gets th...

Tucker Carlson calls for Senator Burr to resign over insider trading ahead of coronavirus

Tucker Carlson calls for Senator Burr to resign over insider trading On Thursday night, Fox News host Tucker Carlson called for Republican Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina to resign and be prosecuted for insider trading. Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman sold stock in mid-February that he knew would take a hit due to the coronavirus . And while Burr downplayed the threat of the coronavirus publicly, NPR obtained a recording of him privately warning of its dangers. “There is one thing about this,” Burr is heard saying in the recording, “it is much more aggressive in its transmission than anything we have seen in recent history. It’s probably more akin to the 1918 pandemic.” The 1918 pandemic to which Burr is referring is estimated to have killed between 50 million and 100 million people worldwide. Carlson slammed Burr not only for insider trading, but also for not warning the public about how dangerous the coronaviru...

Before Virus Outbreak, a Cascade of Warnings Went Unheeded

From left: Then-Chief of Staff John Kelly, then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Vice President Mike Pence at the White House on Aug. 28, 2017. WASHINGTON — The outbreak of the respiratory virus began in China and was quickly spread around the world by air travelers, who ran high fevers. In the United States, it was first detected in Chicago, and 47 days later the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. By then it was too late: 110 million Americans were expected to become ill, leading to 7.7 million hospitalized and 586,000 dead. That scenario, code-named “Crimson Contagion,” was simulated by the Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services in a series of exercises that ran from last January to August. The simulation’s sobering results — contained in a draft report dated October 2019 that has not previously been reported — drove home just how underfunded, underprepared and uncoordinated the federal government would be for a life-or-death battle ...
